CME Accreditation for live events

The accreditation process for Live Events is now completely online at the web page of EACCME – European Accreditation Council For Continuing Medical Education (www.eaccme.eu)
European accreditation is granted to organizers that apply for the accreditation of a CME activity through the European Accreditation Council for CME (EACCME). The EACCME is run by the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS). Initially the EACCME will only accredit traditional CME activities such as congresses, workshops, symposia. At a later stage, long distance learning CME activities and enduring materials will also be considered for accreditation. In order to obtain EACCME accreditation, the CME activity must be accredited by the national CME authority of the country where the event takes place and approved by the UEMS Section or Accreditation Council. For CME activities taking place in countries where there is no CME authority, the EACCME will rely on the expertise of its Specialist Sections/European Boards.

New criteria for the accreditation of live educational events have been amended by UEMS in 2012 (UEMS 2012/30).These criteria  have become applicable for all applications made as of 1st January 2013 and supersede the previous accreditation criteria (UEMS D 9908 and subsequent revisions) as of that date

Deadline

Applications should reach the EACCME Secretariat at least 3 months prior to the start of the CME activity in order to allow the EACCME to contact the national CME authority of the host country and the UEMS Section for approval.

Once the CME activity is approved by both the national CME authority of the host country and the UEMS Section, European accreditation is granted by the EACCME. The approval is valid only for the given event. The organizer will receive a letter of accreditation with the number of CME credits granted and an invoice for administrative expenses. The EACCME awards the appropriate number of European credits for each event based on theEuropean CME Credits System (ECMEC’s) based on the one hour of educational activity = one ECMEC system with a maximum of 3 ECMEC’s for a half-day and 6 ECMEC’s for a whole day. The summary details of the event will be published on the EACCME website together with the number of CME credits granted.

Statement
Publicity material can advertise the approval by using the following statement:
The < name of institution > (or) < title of the CME activity > is accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) to provide the following CME activity for medical specialists. The EACCME is an institution of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS), www.uems.net.
The < title of the CME activity > is designated for a maximum of (or “for up to”) < number of hours > hours of European external CME credits. Each medical specialist should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.
EACCME credits are recognized by the American Medical Association towards the Physician’s Recognition Award (PRA). To convert EACCME credit to AMA PRA category 1 credit, contact the AMA.
The above statement must also appear on the attendance certificates delivered to the participants by the organizer.
Recognition by the AMA
All CME activities approved by the EACCME are valid for recognition by the American Medical Association (AMA) towards the Physician’s Recognition Award (PRA). Vice-versa all CME activities approved by the American Medical Association (AMA) are recognized by the EACCME.
Satellite symposium
Satellite symposia which form part of a congress which has been approved for CME do not get separate approval for CME credits by EACCME. They are considered part of the whole meeting programme and are therefore covered by the congress CME. There is no specific allocation of hours to them.
Satellite symposia organized before or after the main congress can be considered as a separate event for EACCME credits.
However the EACCME will consider any application for European accreditation submitted for a satellite symposium as a separate application if the EACCME has not been informed of the main congress.
Satellite symposia approved by the EACCME will be allowed to print the following statement on their certificates and programme:
The < name of institution > (or) < title of the CME activity > is accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) to provide the following CME activity for medical specialists. The EACCME is an institution of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS), www.uems.net.
As this event is taking place during a meeting that has been accredited by the UEMS – EACCME, no additional credits can be allocated.Applications for European accreditation for satellite symposia will also be subject to an invoice.
